Hello writers -- thank you for joining my Substack. I will be sending you 16 writing prompts twice a week. Eight fiction prompts and eight journaling prompts. All of these prompts will get you writing. I challenge you to use at least two of these prompts every week. Don’t worry about the outcome—this is all about the process. Use these prompts to learn more about your characters (if you’re writing fiction) or to learn more about yourself (if you’re journaling.

Before we get to the prompts, I want to share this quote from David Lynch:

“I’ve painted in different cities, but in LA, my studio is basically outdoors. Painting involves things that are toxic. You want it to be able to do certain things, so it’s better to have an outdoor studio. Different times of the day have different light in LA, but when it’s blinding golden sunshine, it’s not always perfect for painting. I think the place is really important, so I do a certain thing here in LA, but I’ve also done paintings in Paris that are quite different. In different places, all the senses are sensing different things and the painting comes out different.”

  1. Where do you like to write?

  2. Does your physical location have an impact on what you write?

NOW LET’S GET WRITING.

Today’s prompts were inspired by David Lynch’s movie BLUE VELVET.
