In case you think I'm high brow or above sharing A TWEET FROM MINNIE DRIVER as our daily inspiration, you are deeply mistaken.
Your Daily Creative Inspiration
This is Minnie Driver: “Joel Schumacher was the funniest, chicest, most hilarious director I ever worked with. Once, on set, an actress was complaining about me within earshot; how I was dreadfully over the top (I was). Joel barely looked up from his New York Times and said: “Oh Honey, no one ever paid to see under the top.”
I love that.
Okay, let's write.
Your Daily Writing Prompt
Hellor writers...today’s prompts were inspired by the movie (not the musical, but also the musical) Tick...Tick...Boom.
EXERCISE #1: “Lately, I’ve been hearing this sound. Everywhere I go. Like a tick, tick, tick...”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Think of an ENDING you’ve weathered. The end of a relationship, the end of a job, moving from one place to another. What did you learn from that ending?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where two of your characters have their last encounter. They should know this is the last time they’re going to see each other.
EXERCISE #2: “What is the point of money if you can’t spend it on the people you love?”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Imagine you had unlimited resources – who would you spoil and how would you spoil them?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where one of your characters gives another character an extravagant gift. Let’s say for the purposes of drama, the gift is not well received.
EXERCISE #3: “I have two keyboards, a Macintosh computer, a cat.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Make an inventory of everyday, normal, boring items in your home – at least 10 OBJECTS – and write about what they say about you.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, imagine what your protagonist’s home looks like and freewrite about the various objects and items you picture them owning.
EXERCISE #4: “By the time my parents were thirty, they already had two kids. They had careers with steady paychecks, a mortgage.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about who and where your parents were when they were your current age. What do you know about them from that moment in time?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a monologue where one of your characters is talking about how they differ from their parents.
EXERCISE #5: “Susan grew up in a small town in the Midwest. She went to college to study biology, she thought she’d become a doctor, maybe teach. But then she fell in love with modern dance.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write a portrait of yourself in the third person. Imagine you’re a piece of art in a museum and a docent is talking about you, what would they say?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where two other characters are talking about your protagonist... What do they say about them when they aren’t around?
EXERCISE #6: “I went to three funerals last year.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about THE BEST funeral you’ve ever been to.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, freewrite about the death that most deeply affected your protagonist.
EXERCISE #7: “How can you possibly think about your show when your friend is in the hospital?”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write everything you can remember about the last time you visited a friend at the hospital.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a monologue where your main character talks about NOT visiting a friend at the hospital.
EXERCISE #8: “I guess I just wanted you to tell me not to go.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Think of someone you have a complicated relationship with and write about everything you WANT from them.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where two of your characters are struggling to communicate with each other. They both want opposite things. Give them a mundane task to complete while they talk.
