Your Daily Writing Prompt
Today’s prompts were inspired by the movie Drive My Car.
EXERCISE #1: “But even if you think you know someone well, even if you love that person deeply, you can't completely look into that person's heart.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about someone you love deeply and what you find mysterious about them.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene with two of the characters from your work-in-progress – two characters who are close to each other, who know each other well – and start with a line of dialogue along the lines of “Sometimes I feel like I don’t know you at all.” See what comes from there.
EXERCISE #2: “My hardships might be even greater than yours but I don’t give in to despair.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about a great hardship that you have overcome.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a monologue where one of your characters talks about a hardship from their past. Include an expression of joy, a repeated phrase, and something forgotten.
EXERCISE #3: “Those who survive keep thinking about the dead.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write a letter to a dead person, include five things you wish they knew.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where two of your characters talk about someone they miss. Include a moment where one of the characters reveals something about the dead person that the other character didn’t know.
EXERCISE #4: “I actually sometimes do search your name online.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Make a list of embarrassing things you’ve searched online and write about what those things say about you.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where one of your characters confronts another character about something they learned online. Decide for yourself if the information they learned is true or not.
EXERCISE #5: “My mother had a separate personality named Sachi.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about the different selves you show to different people in your life.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, freewrite/brainstorm all the different ways your protagonist might interact with various other characters in your story.
EXERCISE #6: “I was so deeply hurt. To the point of distraction.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about an offense or emotional wound that you feel like you’re still recovering from. How do you wish things could be different?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where your protagonist confronts another character about a raw emotional wound.
EXERCISE #7: “She sneaks in multiple times and leaves a token of herself each time.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about an object that you think might remind OTHER PEOPLE about you, and why.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a monologue where your main character talks about an object they possess that belongs to someone else. Why do they have it and what does this object represent?
EXERCISE #8: “I thought that once I went home, we would never be the same again.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about your childhood home and how it has changed since your earliest memories of it.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where one of your characters talks about why they can’t go back home, be really specific about what home means to them.
