Your Daily Writing Prompt
Today’s prompts were inspired by the movie Dodgeball.
EXERCISE #1: “I know you. You know you. And I know you know that I know you.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about how you think you are perceived by the people closest to you.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, do some freewriting about how each of your supporting characters see your main character. What are their opinions (both good and bad) and them?
EXERCISE #2: “If you’re going to become true dodgeballers, then you’ve got to learn the five d’s of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge!”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Think of something you’re good at and write about the five most important skills required for that activity.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a monologue where your protagonist talks about their greatest talent.
EXERCISE #3: “Too bad Hallmark doesn’t make a Sorry Your Dodgeball Coach Got Killed By Two Tons of Irony card.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write a message of condolences and empathy to someone you know who has faced hardship in the last year.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a letter IN THE VOICE OF ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS to another character, expressing sorrow, regret, or forgiveness.
EXERCISE #4: “You’ll laugh at this one day.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about a difficult situation you’ve faced recently, and try to look at it with distance. Be as objective about the situation as possible. Try to find the humor in it.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where your protagonist receives TERRIBLE news. And include the line “you’ll laugh at this one day.”
EXERCISE #5: “It looks like the clock is about to strike midnight on this Cinderella story, turning Average Joe’s into the proverbial pumpkin.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about the most recent “ending” you’ve experienced. A time when you felt like you were ending a specific chapter in your life and moving on to a new one.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, do some freewriting about the emotional stakes of your story. What possible endings might your protagonist face?
EXERCISE #6: “Are you angry now?”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Rant about something that really pisses you off.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where your main character goes on an angry tirade about another character.
EXERCISE #7: “If people never quit when the going got tough, they’d have nothing to regret all their lives.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about something you’ve quit. Do you have any regrets? How might things be different now if you hadn’t quit?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where one of your characters makes a clean break from something or someone (they quit a job, they break up with someone, etc.). Make it a BIG decision.
EXERCISE #8: “I’m my own boss. I created myself.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about one of your personas. Do you ever feel like you’re playing a character in your own life?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, do some freewriting about your main character and all the ways they might act differently with each of the other characters who they interact with in your story.
