What is Your Daily Writing Prompt?
It's more than just a Substack. It's a reminder: you're the only one who's going to write your stories!
Welcome to Your Daily Writing Prompt.
I’ve been writing movies for nearly twenty years — movies you might have grown up on (Another Cinderella Story, Radio Rebel), movies you watch with your family over the holidays (a bunch of Hallmark movies), movies you watch with your kids (Sophia Grace and Rosie’s Royal Adventure), that movie you just watched on Hulu (Abandoned), and a ton of movies that have sold but haven’t been made because that’s how Hollywood works. I also write plays.
And after writing dozens and dozens (hundreds?) of scripts, every time I sit down to write something new, I always feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. I always feel like an imposter. I stare at the blank screen and wonder how I ever did this before.
Then I remember: you cannot rewrite a blank page, but you can always make bad writing better.
And then I start writing. Badly. Trusting myself that I will make it better later. I often give myself prompts as jumping off points. Even if I know they aren’t scenes that will be in the final draft of my script. Just questions and ideas to get the words flowing.
There are a lot of bad writing prompts out there. The bad ones tell you exactly what to write. That’s not what I’m here for. All of my writing prompts leave room for your creativity. You have ideas in your head, these prompts will gently nudge you in various creative directions.
I’ll be sending out prompts twice a week. There will be a mix of journaling prompts and fiction prompts. Do one prompt, do a few of the prompts, do all of the prompts—it doesn’t matter. As long as you’re writing you’re doing it right. So let’s write.
