Your Daily Writing Prompt
Hello writers! Today’s prompts were inspired by the movie Clue.
EXERCISE #1: “That’s what we’re trying to find out! We’re trying to find out who killed him and where and with what!”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Make a list of unanswered questions from your own life. Mysteries you never learned the answer to. They can be big or small. Then pick one of those unanswered questions to explore.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, make a list of questions about your protagonist that you don’t know the answer to. When you have at least ten questions, pick one to write about.
EXERCISE #2: “Don’t worry, there’s nothing illegal about any of this.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about a law (or a rule) you’ve either broken or considered breaking.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where your protagonist breaks a law or a rule (however you want to define that – it could be that they break one of their own personal rules).
EXERCISE #3: “You all seem very anxious about something.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: What makes you anxious? How do you behave when you’re anxious?
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a monologue where your protagonist talks about the thing that is currently making them the MOST anxious. What is their greatest fear?
EXERCISE #4: “Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Think of someone you WISH you had confronted about a wrong-doing and write everything you wish you had said to them.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where your protagonist confronts someone and tells them off.
EXERCISE #5: “Husbands should be like Kleenex. Soft, strong, and disposable.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Briefly write about your softest relationship, your strongest relationship, and your most disposable relationship.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where your protagonist embodies one of those three adjectives: soft, strong, or disposable.
EXERCISE #6: “I hated her so much. It...the...flames. Flames, flames, on the side of my face.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write a rant about something you detest more than anything.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a monologue where your protagonist goes on a rant about something THEY hate more than anything.
EXERCISE #7: “Nobody. No body, that’s what we mean. Mr. Boddy’s body, it’s gone.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about something that’s gone that you wish you could have back.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene where two of your characters are mourning something (it does not have to be a person – can be an object, an idea, anything that they miss).
EXERCISE #8: “I’m afraid I’m a little bit accident prone.”
PERSONAL PROMPT: Write about either your stupidest or your best accident.
NARRATIVE PROMPT: If you’re writing a narrative, write a scene between your protagonist and at least two other characters that begins with the line “it was an accident.”
